Ndaiga Bridge

Project Overview

At the very start of January 2015, the Bugiri- Malaba highway was closed to heavy trucks after Ndaiga Bridge along River Malaba developed cracks and caved in.

The road plays a primary role in trade along the Northern Corridor and is a major route for goods entering the Great Lakes region, meant that it was extremely urgent for UNRA to immediately find contractors for emergency design and build of the collapsed bridge.

The damage had been caused by erosion of the main pillars of the bridge which were constructed more than 40 years ago. The erosion had been escalated by increased volume of waters in River Malaba, following persistent heavy rains. The major task was put forward to Terrain Services Ltd who were required to act both swiftly and methodically.

The following works occurred:

  • Topographical, geotechnical, hydrological surveys
  • Detailed design process for piles, foundations, sub and super structures
  • CFA piling to foundations
  • RC construction of 2 No. abutments and 1 No. pier
  • Design, manufacture, shipping, erection of 2 No. x 20m span composite steel beam/concrete deck bridge
  • Demolition of existing bridge
  • Relocation of river course and river protection
  • Approach roads

Manafa Bridge

Project Overview

In 2015 the Manafa Bridge along Mbale-Tororo highway caved in paralyzing traffic along the road that also connects to Northern Uganda and Southern Sudan.

In a state of emergency, the Uganda National Roads Authority required a contractor to take on the job of replacing Manafa Bridge under a design and build contract.

The project lasted 12 months and involved the following works:

  • Topographical, Geotechnical, Hydrological Surveys
